Archaeology, Collections and Conservation Department

The Archaeology, Collections and Conservation department (ACC) investigates, assesses, conserves, curates and promotes the rich cultural heritage of AlUla County and the areas of Khaybar and Tayma under RCU’s jurisdiction for the benefit of Saudi Arabia and the broader international community.

About ACC

The Archaeology, Collections and Conservation (ACC) department is mandated to investigate, assess, conserve, curate and promote the cultural heritage of AlUla County and the areas of Khaybar and Tayma under RCU’s jurisdiction for the benefit of Saudi Arabia and the broader international community.
ACC commissions best-practice scientific research, partnering with leading global institutions, and in collaboration with RCU Culture Sector Planning, develops cultural heritage management policies, guidelines and strategies that guide research and practice in archaeology, urban heritage and site conservation. ACC fosters knowledge sharing, intercultural dialogue, and scientific cooperation and ensures the long-term preservation of the region’s significant immoveable cultural heritage.
In addition, ACC receives, acquires, manages, conserves and researches moveable cultural heritage artefacts and art collections for their long-term preservation, and as a beneficial resource for researchers and public engagement.
The department is committed to enabling Saudi-led study and management of cultural heritage going forward by building capacity and engagement through educational programmes, professional development, fellowships, community contact, communications and cultural heritage diplomacy.

Archaeology & Cultural Heritage Research

The Archaeology & Cultural Heritage Research team leads the strategic programme of work illuminating the vibrant cultural heritage of AlUla, Khaybar and Tayma through scientific investigation of the rich archaeological remains and other cultural heritage sources.

Collections

The Collections team receives, acquires, manages, conserves, researches and co-interprets RCU’s art, archaeological, cultural heritage and natural history objects for their preservation and public access.

Site Conservation

The Site Conservation team leads preservation of the immovable prehistoric and historic heritage (e.g. archaeological, rock art, historic monumental sites) of AlUla, Khaybar and Tayma, determining and managing appropriate conservation activities to ensure the sites remain resilient.

Urban Heritage

The Urban Heritage team identifies and classifies urban and rural architectural heritage in AlUla, Khaybar and Tayma and manages its conservation, preserving each site’s authenticity, fostering a deeper cultural connection, and safeguarding continuity.
